blue november
Blue November is a deeply personal project born from my desire to honor my dad's bravery in his fight against prostate cancer and to raise awareness during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. In 2022, our family was surprised with the devastating news that my dad’s cancer had returned as metastatic cancer. While it is no longer curable, he continues to undergo treatment to manage the pain and slow its progression, and because of that, I started the campaign as a source of donations to help him in this process. After two difficult years filled with challenges and uncertainty, I felt compelled to create something meaningful, and this project became a way to not only spotlight the importance of prostate cancer awareness but also to show my dad that he is not alone in this battle.

When I started this project, I had a clear vision of creating a main illustration that would evoke peace and hope. During the research and sketching process, I felt stuck, but I kept listening to the song “Por Enquanto” by Cássia Eller. When I paused to really pay attention to the lyrics, one line stood out to me: “We’re going back home.” While most of the song touches on different themes, this line stuck in my mind and ultimately guided me in the right direction for the project.
Each element in the illustration carries meaningful significance. The blue color represents prostate cancer while also symbolizing the sky—or Heaven. The mountains in the background reflect the place in Brazil where my dad raised me, a connection to home. The rainbow embodies hope, a cornerstone of our Christian faith. The road signifies my dad’s journey, and the palm trees represent the warmth and support of those around him, reminding him he is not alone in his brave battle.
